The Case of the New Cookie explores the travel industry – specifically Indirect (travel agency) Airline Distribution – from the pure supply chain perspective that it is. In this analogy, the airline is transformed into a cookie manufacturer seeking to differentiate its product to the benefit of its bottom line and its customers. Global Distribution Systems (GDS) Sabre, Travelport and Amadeus are represented by three trucking companies by which the cookie product is delivered from the supplier to a worldwide network of retailers and consumers.
As the story plays out, it becomes clear that the approach used today for indirect airline distribution – largely controlled by three powerful intermediaries – does not follow modern supply chain logic nor does it meet the needs of travel suppliers, buyers or consumers. Today’s model is filled with complexities, inflexibility, and sustained high costs. A new model is needed!
Open AXIS Group invites you to join in support of Distribution 2.0 – a new Indirect Channel model that expands the level of airline products and services available to agencies, corporations, the GDS and other travel intermediaries.
